Callous Physical Theatre is dedicated to the creation and performance of original interdisciplinary dance and physical theatre works that immerse the audience and performers in multi-sensorial events featuring an athletic contemporary dance style that melds techniques of Modern Dance, Ballet, and the African-Brazilian form of Capoeira.
Directors Joséphine A. Zmolek and Paul Zmolek draw inspiration for their collaborative choreographic installations from Ushio Amagatsu’s Sankai Juku, Pina Bausch’s Tanztheatre Wuppertal, Lloyd Newson’s DV8 Physical Theatre, Robert Wilson’s visual theatre, Antonin Artaud’s call for a “cruel theatre”, Jerzy Grotowski’s “holy actor”, Richard Schechner’s analysis of ritual theatre, the aleatoric compositions of John Cage, the irreverance of DADA and the Futurists, and the fearless honesty and complete vulnerability demanded from Performance Art.
