New Music Concert at Barefoot Studios

Now’s the Time, featuring Kenny Mandell on saxes and Ethan Cudaback on drums, will present a concert of new music 8:00 PM Saturday, January 28, 2006 at Barefoot Studios. $8 admission.

The concert is being held in celebration of the final day of Lucky 13, paintings by David N. Goldberg currently on exhibition at Barefoot Studios. “The tension between lyrical forms and abstract free expression in Kenny Mandell's music resonates with that of my art,” Goldberg explained.

Mandell, a veteran of the Seattle new music community, has founded and performed with numerous adventurous music ensembles including the world music ensemble Second Nature, the experimental music and theatre group Voices, an avanté jazz quartet One Hand Clapping, a 16 member Creative Music Orchestra and the punk jazz trio Pagan Babies.

Cudaback’s musical ventures include jazz standard, rock and punk bands in addition to his influences from such free jazz giants as Ed Blackwell, Denis Charles, Matt Crane, and Rashied Ali. Now’s the Time features duets of primarily improvised jazz inspired by Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Albert Ayler and other greats of the free jazz movement.

“The synergy between David’s paintings and Kenny’s music will provide audience members with an unique aesthetic experience,”   writes co-owner Joséphine A. Zmolek. “This is the first,” Zmolek adds, “of what we hope will be an on-going New Music Series at Barefoot Studios.”
